With local elections in May our eye was caught by some market research conducted recently amongst local councillors which came out with some remarkable figures

Polling from Survation of councillors from different parties shows some striking difference between the parties:

How would you describe your overall satisfaction with the performance of your party locally in 2022?

Conservative councillors: net plus 20
Labour councillors: net plus 73
Lib Dem councillors: net plus 92

Note that this is their assessment of their local performance for which they were responsible!

How would you describe your overall satisfaction with the performance of your party nationally in 2022?

Conservative councillors: net minus 53
Labour councillors: net plus 65
Lib Dem councillors: net plus 56

To what extent, if at all, do you think favourably or unfavourably towards [leader of their own party]?

Conservative councillors: net plus 57 for Sunak
Labour councillors: net plus 67 for Starmer
Lib Dem councillors: net plus 80 for Davey

These results should not be that surprising to us here is Babergh where the Conservative group have split forcing a number to become Independents whist others have boycotted Council meetings as part of their internal arguments. How any of that helps local people hit by reduced living standards and cuts to local service funding imposed by the national Conservative government is anyone's guess. All worth remembering when you ponder where to put your cross on the ballot paper this May.
