A Big Thank You

December 13, 2019 10:57 AM

There was no getting away from it. Last night was not a good time to be a Liberal Democrat. Losing our leader and one seat was bad enough. Giving Boris free reign on Brexit is even worse. As a fervent believer in the European project a bit of me died last night

Here in South Suffolk we had the following result

General election 2019: South Suffolk

James Cartlidge (Conservative) 33,270 62.2% vote +1.7%

Elizabeth Hughes (Labour) 10,373 19.4%vote -8.4%

David Beavan (Liberal Democrats) 6,702 12.5% vote +6.7%

Robert Lindsay (Green) 3,144 5.9% vote +2.7%

We doubled our vote share which out-performed the national improvement in the party's support which gives something to work with for the future. With almost 2/3 of the total vote we offer James Cartlidge our congratulations on the win. In his acceptance speech he emphasised his "one nation" Toryism. We will monitor his parliamentary record to see that he does indeed behave that way

It just remains to thank all those who worked for us during the election, delivering leaflets, displaying posters, talking to voters. David Beavan who came late to the fight when our previous candidate had to withdraw on health grounds fought a great campaign. He would have been a great MP

But above all if you voted for us on Thursday, A BIG THANK YOU We will continue to fight for an open, green and fairer society. Hopefully you will continue to support us in the future
