Nigel Bennett is the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Campaigner for South Suffolk.
He has lived in Sudbury and worked as a teacher at Great Cornard Upper School, for over 20 years. His 2 daughters have been to primary, middle and upper schools in Sudbury. One is now at University while the youngest is at Sudbury Upper School Sixth Form. He plays local Sunday league cricket for Great Cornard.
Nigel is a Sudbury Town Councillor and he has been Mayor of Sudbury in 2002-03 and 2006-07. He has been a campaigner on many local issues including stopping the closure of Walnuttree Hospital, protecting free parking in Sudbury and Hadleigh, Sudbury's Western Bypass, protecting Belle Vue Park and the regeneration of the bus station area. He is Leader of the Liberal Democrats at Babergh who have championed new leisure facilities in Hadleigh, the fight against fuel poverty and cuttting carbon emissions, the provision of affordable housing in our villages, expanding recycling rates and getting Babergh to oppose the expansion of Stanstead Airport.
When Mayor he supported the campaign "Proud of Sudbury" to promote our local shops and services and he worked with the local British Legion to get funding for his idea of a Living War Memorial to tell the stories of those men from Sudbury that died in both World Wars. These Memorials can both be seen in the Sudbury's Heritage Centre in the Town Hall.
Nigel has tried to improve our community and he has been part of the Community Group working on a new Health Facility for Sudbury and the surrounding villages with the PCT and he has been a representative on the Masterplan for the Chilton Woods development trying to maximise the affordable housing and leisure facilities achieved from developers and minimising the effects of this mixed use scheme. Nigel's keen interests are how we can meet the threats of climate change and develop a green economy, a quality education for all our young people, the provision of affordable housing, reducing fuel poverty and the need for international development.
Pledge to the people of South Suffolk 1. I will not employ family members at public expense under any circumstances. 2. I will advertise all publicly funded jobs in the local press. All jobs, whether London or constituency based, will be advertised in the local newspapers and open to all on the basis of merit. 3. I will publish a list of all employees on my website. I will also publish the total salary bill for these employees. However, in order to respect individual privacy, I will not publish any individual salaries other than my own. 4. I will publish details of all my expense claims at least monthly on our website. No expenses will be claimed without a bona fide receipt. 5. I will produce and publish an annual report on my work as an MP, including all my expenses. 6. My main home will remain in Sudbury. I will only make an expense claim where I am incurring genuinely additional costs in the service of my constituents. Even if there are rules that allow me to claim for food and other items while staying away from home, I will not do this. I will only claim for costs that are both extra and unavoidable in my work as your MP. 7. I will not accept any gifts, gratuities, entertainment or favour from lobbyists or anyone else who might be seeking to influence my opinion. Listing such things in the Register of Members' Interests is not good enough. I simply won't take them. 8. I will not take any other paid employment, directorship or consultancy beyond being Suffolk South full-time MP. 9. I will hold regular constituents' surgeries at accessible venues around the constituency. 10. I will voluntarily submit myself for recall to the constituents of Suffolk South upon receipt and verification of a petition of 20% of the local electorate (and following a Parliamentary censure). I will immediately resign as MP in such circumstances, initiating a by-election accordingly.
