The Liberal Democrats would take 4 million people out of tax by increasing the threshold to start paying income tax to £10,000. This would especially benefit those on minimum wage and pensioners. It would save the average person £700 per year.
At the same time the Liberal Democrats would close tax loopholes, cut reliefs and anti avoidance measures that benefit the most wealthy to create a fairer tax system.
Chris Huhne MP, the Liberal Democrats Home Affairs spokesperson, also told South Suffolk Liberal Democrats at their Dinner in Sudbury that it was important that the country did not face the same mistakes made by the Tories in the 1980s recession when a whole generation faced long term unemployment. He warned the Tory remedy was more of the same.
Finally, he reminded local Liberal Democrats that they were the only party to have a comprehensive policy strategy to achieve Zero carbon by 2050 and of the failure of the Conservatives to protect civil liberties from greater surveillance under this Labour government.
