For the second year running proposed funding for the Eden's Youth Club allowing it to potentially open for an extra evening has been cut at the last minute by the ruling Conservative group on Sudbury Town Council.
£4,500 had been put in the budget to allow this but it was removed at Full Council when the precept for 2009-10 was set.
"Last year, this funding was removed at the last minute but to do it a second year when councillors have been saying they want to improve youth services is quite remarkable and disgraceful. I think we can now recognise the hollow words of some councillors." Said Cllr Nigel Bennett.
"The funding was less than the price of a small bar of chocolate over the year for each household. What is more important than a Youth Club that serves hundreds of youngsters?" said Cllr Andy Welsh.
"Eden's performs a vital service in our community and it has suffered and our youngsters have lost a potential extra service because the Conservatives on the Town Council decided to make last minute cuts due to the £17,000 that will hit the taxpayer this year for that land purchase to the rear of the Town Hall." Said Cllr Debbie Thomas.
"The public need to know that on the same evening the Conservative Councillors voted down our proposal to reduce the Mayor's allowance to save money. Their choice to oppose it while happy to cut funding to the Tourist Information Centre and Eden's is shameful." Said Cllr Tony Platt.
