It now costs about £1,400 to heat the average British home and for many pensioners on a pension of £8,000 per year, there is a real risk that older people are getting into a "heat or eat" scenario.
The ability to heat the home is vital as in winter for every 1 degree C drop in temperature there are some 8,000 extra deaths in Britain.
Nigel Bennett, South Suffolk Parliamentary campaigner, said "There is a need to end this scandal of fuel poverty in the UK. The Government needs to take serious and comprehensive action to make sure homes are well insulated, more energy efficient and the elderly do not have to worry about an essential - keeping warm."
