Lib Dem Councillors at the Kingfisher Car Park in Sudbury
Sudbury and Hadleigh area Liberal Democrats were celebrating last weekend after retaining free car parking in both towns. Nigel Bennett, town and district councillor said, "With the ever increasing threat from out of town developments, we have to ensure that people still find Sudbury town centre an attractive place to shop. Babergh District Council should be nurturing its market towns not driving people out by charging for car parking."
David Grutchfield, Town, District and County councillor for Hadleigh added, "Charging for long stay parking would have penalised some of the lowest paid workers in our towns, as well as the volunteers in the charity shops. I have represented Hadleigh for over 20 years and I have always been against charging for car parks."
Martyn Booth, District councillor for Sudbury said "This would have been a stealth tax which disproportionately affects low paid workers. We should not take risks with our economic centres when we have neither evidence nor impact studies to inform our decision. It would be foolish to start charging when Tescos in Sudbury are about to expand their store size by 75%."
