Local residents campaigning with Kathy Pollard and local Lib Dem Councillors
Residents along the A131 Cross Street have long endured fast-moving HGVs and cars mounting the pavements and putting residents lives at risk. This was given added urgency after the Labour government rejected the Western Bypass. Residents' campaign for a traffic management solution was supported by all the Lib Dem Town and District councillors, who joined them on their demonstrations.
"Although the County Council have come up with a solution involving bollards and a build out, it has been a long fight to find a scheme that stops the real everyday hazards that residents face from vehicles mounting the pavement." said Cllr Nigel Bennett.
"Traffic management schemes may stop speeding and improve safety but we also need to reduce the volume of traffic on our narrow streets that were not designed for these levels." said Cllr Martyn Booth.
The only real solution to all the traffic problems of South ward and Sudbury is a Western Bypass/relief road, which is becoming only more urgent due to the future housing expansion and industrial growth of the Chilton Woods development. Lib Dem County Councillor and South Suffolk Parliamentary candidate, Kathy Pollard, ensured that the Sudbury Western Bypass was put back on the County's list of road schemes when she held the portfolio for Transport 5 years ago. Mrs Pollard said, "Having fought to get the Bypass back on the agenda, we don't intend to give up now."
